The Grant Birthplace in Point Pleasant, Ohio, is a special house where Ulysses S. Grant, who later became a famous U.S. President, was born in 1822. His parents, Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant, rented this home in 1821. Young Ulysses lived here for less than a year before his family moved to Georgetown, Ohio.

Today, the Ohio History Connection operates the site as a historic house museum. It is filled with items that once belonged to Grant. There are also other items from that time period. In 1998, the birthplace and nearby buildings were added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means they are part of an important historic district.

Ulysses S. Grant's Birthplace

Early Life in Point Pleasant

Ulysses S. Grant was born in this small house in Point Pleasant, Ohio in 1822. His parents, Jesse and Hannah Grant, had just moved into the home. They paid $2 a month to rent it. Ulysses spent only a short time here. His family moved to another town, Georgetown, Ohio, just before his first birthday.

The Birthplace Today

Today, the Grant Birthplace is a historic house museum. The Ohio History Connection takes care of it. Visitors can see furniture and objects that belonged to the Grant family. Some items are also from the early 1800s. This helps people imagine what life was like back then.

In 1998, the birthplace and the area around it became a historic district. This means it is a special place. It is protected because of its history. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Digging Up History

The area around the Grant Birthplace is also an important place for archaeology. This is where scientists study the past by digging up old objects.

In 2010, some construction work was done at the site. This was to make it easier for everyone to visit. During this work, archaeologists found something exciting. They discovered the foundations of an old tannery. This tannery was built around the 1810s. A tannery is a place where animal hides are turned into leather.

Other archaeological work has also happened here. In 1984, old pottery from the early 1800s was found. This happened when a nearby bridge was being replaced. Later, in 2005, a survey was done before a new building was put up. This survey found a few small stone flakes. These flakes were from a very old, unknown time period.
