The Ulysses S. Grant Home in Galena, Illinois is a special house. It used to be the home of Ulysses S. Grant. He was a very important general during the Civil War. Later, he became the 18th president of the United States. The house was built in 1859-1860. People in Galena gave it to Grant in 1865. They wanted to thank him for his great service in the war. Since 1904, the house has been kept as a memorial to him.

The Story of Grant's Home

This house was first built for a person named Alexander J. Jackson. Later, a group of important local people bought it. They were Republicans, and one of them was Elihu B. Washburne. They gave the house to Grant as a gift.

Grant and his family lived here during his presidential campaign in 1868. They also stayed here sometimes when he was president. Grant last visited the home in 1880.

What the House Looks Like

The house was designed by William Dennison. It is built in the Italianate style. This style was popular for homes back then.

Italianate homes often have clear, boxy shapes. They have roofs that are not very steep. You might see balconies with railings that stick out over covered porches. The edges of the roof also hang out a bit. These are all typical features of this style.

Why This Home Is Important

The U.S. Grant Home is located on Bouthillier Street. The state of Illinois owns it. The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency takes care of it. It is now a historic house museum.

The rooms are set up to look like they did in the mid-1860s. Many of the items inside actually belonged to the Grant family. You can learn about Grant's time in the Civil War. You can also learn about his time as president. There is another building nearby with more exhibits. These exhibits share more about Grant and the history of the house.

The Grant Home was named a National Historic Landmark on December 19, 1960. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 15, 1966. This happened when the program first started. The Grant House is also part of the larger Galena Historic District. This district was recognized in 1969. It includes over 1,000 other important buildings.
