Grant's Home: A Look Back
How Grant Got His Home
The house was first built for a person named Alexander J. Jackson. Later, some important local people bought it. One of them was Elihu B. Washburne. They then gave the house to General Grant.
Grant and his family lived here when he was running for president in 1868. They also stayed there sometimes during his time as president. He visited the home for the last time in 1880.
The Style of the House
William Dennison designed the house in the Italianate style. This style was popular for buildings at the time. Italianate homes often have clear, rectangular shapes. They also feature roofs with a gentle slope.
You might see balconies with railings that extend over covered porches. The roof edges, called eaves, often stick out a bit. These features give the house a classic and elegant look.
A Special Historic Place
Visiting the Grant Home
The U.S. Grant Home is on Bouthillier Street. The state of Illinois owns this historic site. A state agency manages it as a historic house museum. The rooms are set up to look like they did in the mid-1860s.
Many of the items inside the house actually belonged to the Grant family. Visitors can learn about Grant's life. This includes his time in the Civil War and his presidency. There is also another building nearby. It has more exhibits about Grant and the history of the home.
