About Grapeland's Location
Grapeland covers a total area of about 2.59 square miles (6.70 square kilometers). Most of this area is land, with a very small part being water.
The city is located about 60 miles (97 km) west of Lufkin, Texas.

Grapeland's History
People started settling in the area where Grapeland is now around 1872. This happened because the International–Great Northern Railroad was being built nearby. The new railroad made Grapeland an important meeting point for travel routes. These routes connected towns like Trinity to Augusta, and Palestine to Crockett.
The town was first called "Grapevine." This name came from the many grapevines that had to be cut down to clear the way for the railway tracks.
