Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge is a special place in southeastern Idaho, United States. It is a protected area where wildlife can live safely. This refuge is famous for having the biggest marsh in North America filled with a plant called hardstem bulrush.

The refuge is located in a beautiful high mountain valley near Soda Springs. Here, you can see amazing views, colorful wildflowers, and stunning fall foliage. The land around the refuge is mostly wet meadows and grasslands. This area is a perfect home for many animals.

A Home for Wildlife

Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge covers about 19,400-acre (79 km2) of land. That's a huge area, almost 80 square kilometers! It was created in 1965 to protect the animals and their homes. The United States Fish and Wildlife Service manages this important refuge.

Many different mammals live and raise their young here. You might spot large animals like moose, elk, and mule deer. Smaller creatures also call the refuge home, such as muskrats, badgers, and weasels.

Amazing Birds of Grays Lake

Grays Lake is a fantastic spot for birdwatching! It is especially important for large, beautiful birds.

Sandhill Cranes

The refuge is home to a very large group of greater sandhill cranes. These tall, graceful birds nest here every year. During certain times, like when they are migrating, you can see as many as 1,200 sandhill cranes in the valley. It's an incredible sight!

Trumpeter Swans

Grays Lake is also one of the best places to see the rare trumpeter swan. These are the largest swans in the world. They have bright white feathers and a long, elegant neck. Seeing a trumpeter swan is a truly special experience.

Wetland Wonders

The refuge's wetlands are almost untouched by humans. These areas are vital for many birds and other wildlife. However, new homes and buildings are starting to appear nearby. This kind of development could threaten this special natural area, just like it has affected places like Jackson Hole. Protecting Grays Lake helps keep these amazing birds and animals safe for the future.
