Great Hill is a cool place in Lancashire, England. It's a hill found on Anglezarke Moor, right between the towns of Chorley and Darwen. This hill is part of the West Pennine Moors, a big area of hills and open land. Great Hill is about 3 miles north of Winter Hill, which is the tallest point nearby. Winter Hill stands at 456 meters (1,498 feet) high.

Exploring Great Hill

Great Hill itself is 381 meters (1,252 feet) tall. That's not much higher than the land around it, but it still gives you amazing views! You can see far away in every direction, especially to the north and west. It's a great spot for hikers and anyone who loves nature.

What You Can See and Where to Walk

From the top of Great Hill, you can enjoy fantastic sights. There are paths that lead off in different directions, perfect for exploring.

  • If you head west, you can walk towards White Coppice. On the way, you'll pass the old ruins of a place called Drinkwaters.
  • Going south will take you towards Winter Hill, passing by Hordern Stoops.
  • If you choose to go east, you'll find yourself on a path towards Darwen Tower. This route takes you through areas known as Pimm's and Picadilly, and past the ruins of Hollinshead Hall.

Where the Rivers Begin

Did you know that Great Hill is important for local rivers? The sources of two rivers are found on its slopes. The Black Brook starts here, and so does the River Roddlesworth. It's pretty neat to think that these rivers begin their journey right on this hill!

The Stone Bench at the Top

For a long time, there was a traditional pile of stones called a cairn at the summit. Walkers often build these to mark the top of a hill. But now, the cairn has been replaced by a special stone bench. This bench is shaped like a cross and is a great place to sit down and rest. It also offers some shelter from the wind, which can be quite strong up on the hill!
