Green Valley is a small community in Los Angeles County, California. It is located in the Sierra Pelona Mountains. This area is called a census-designated place, which means it's a specific area defined for collecting population data.

History of Green Valley

Green Valley has a connection to early American travel. A place called Widow Smith's Station was located about a mile south of Green Valley. This station was part of the Butterfield Overland Mail route.

The Butterfield Overland Mail was a famous stagecoach line. It carried mail and passengers across the country. This route was used from 1858 to 1861. The building for Widow Smith's Station is still standing today.

People believe the station was already in use by 1856. A traveler named Harris Newmark mentioned staying there overnight. He was returning to Los Angeles from a meeting at Fort Tejon.

Geography and Location

Green Valley covers an area of about 12.8 square miles (33.2 square kilometers). All of this area is land.

The town is nestled in the Sierra Pelona mountains. It is part of the San Francisquito Canyon. Green Valley is also just a few miles northwest of the Bouquet Reservoir.

Green Valley is located about 19 miles (31 km) west of Palmdale. It is also about 20 miles (33 km) north of Santa Clarita.

People of Green Valley

In 2010, the population of Green Valley was 1,027 people. Most of the people living there were White. There were also smaller groups of African American, Native American, and Asian residents. About 12% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

The average age of people in Green Valley was about 47 years old. Many households in Green Valley were married couples living together. Some households had children under 18, and some had people aged 65 or older living alone.

Most people in Green Valley owned their homes. About 84% of the population lived in homes they owned. The rest lived in rented homes.

Green Valley in Popular Culture

Green Valley has been used as a filming location for TV shows. For example, parts of the first three seasons of the TV series Justified (TV series) were filmed here. Even though the show was set in Kentucky, the scenes were shot in Green Valley.
