Greenport is a town in Columbia County, New York, United States. It's located on the western side of the county and surrounds the city of Hudson on three sides. In 2020, about 4,473 people lived here.
You might know Greenport for the Olana State Historic Site. This beautiful place was once the home of a famous artist named Frederic Edwin Church. His house is decorated in a unique Persian style.

History of Greenport
The area where Greenport is now was first explored by Henry Hudson in 1609. The town itself was officially created in 1837. It was formed from a part of the city of Hudson and used to be part of the town of Claverack. Greenport was the last town to be founded in Columbia County.
Several historic buildings in Greenport are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Van Salsbergen House, built around 1700, the Columbia Turnpike-West Tollhouse, the Turtle House, and the Henry (Hendrick) I. Van Rensselaer House. These places help us learn about the past.
Greenport's Geography
Greenport covers a total area of about 53.1 square kilometers (20.5 square miles). Most of this area is land, with about 4.9 square kilometers (1.9 square miles) being water.
The western edge of Greenport is along the Hudson River. On the other side of the river is Greene County. To the north of Greenport is the town of Stockport. To the east, you'll find Claverack, and to the south is Livingston.
Major roads like US 9 and New York Route 23B pass through the town. There's also a bridge on New York Route 23 that connects Greenport to the village of Catskill.

- Columbia–Greene Community College – This is a two-year public college located in the southern part of Greenport. It's close to the Olana Historical Site.
- Greendale – A small community, called a hamlet, in the southwestern part of the town. It's right on the east bank of the Hudson River.
- Greenport Center – Another hamlet located in the northeastern part of Greenport.
- Hudson – The city of Hudson is almost completely surrounded by the northern part of Greenport.
- Lorenz Park – A hamlet in the northern part of the town, north of Hudson. You can find several large stores here.
- Olana State Historic Site – As mentioned before, this historic home of a famous artist is in the southern part of the town.
- Rogers Island – An island in the Hudson River, located in the southwestern part of Greenport. This island was once known as Vastrick Island. In 1628, it was the site of an important battle during the Beaver War. This battle was fought between the Mohican and Mohawk Native American tribes. They were fighting for control of the beaver fur trade along the Hudson River. Local legends say that the island has been haunted by the spirits of the Mohican warriors who were lost in that battle.
