Guardarraya is a small area, called a barrio, located in the town of Patillas, Puerto Rico. In 2010, about 1,603 people lived there. It's a place where the mountains meet the sea, offering beautiful views.
Guardarraya's Interesting History
Guardarraya is special because it's where the Cordillera Central mountains reach the Caribbean Sea. Long ago, in 1765, people in Guardarraya were known for farming, fishing, and making special oils from plants.
It's also famous for a legend: the capture of a well-known pirate named Roberto Cofresí. He was caught here and handed over to the authorities.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States. In 1899, the United States government counted the people in Puerto Rico. This count, called a census, found that 1,013 people lived in Guardarraya barrio.
