History of Guilford
The land where Guilford now stands was bought from the Oneida people in 1785. The first settlers arrived around 1787. One of the earliest groups settled in what is now called East Guilford. These were the Mercereau brothers, who were Revolutionary War spies for George Washington. They built a mill on Guilford Creek.
Guilford was officially formed in 1813. It was originally part of the town of Oxford and was first named "Eastern." In 1817, its name was changed to "Guilford." Before that, when it was part of Tioga County, it was known as "Fayette."
