Gurban Gurbanov (born on April 13, 1972) is a famous Azerbaijani football manager and former player. He is currently the manager of Qarabag. Gurbanov played as a forward, which means he was a player who mainly tried to score goals.
He started his amazing 18-year career in 1988 with a local club called Kur. During his time as a player, he scored 178 goals in 399 league matches. This is a lot of goals! He also holds the record for the most goals scored for the Azerbaijan national team, with 14 goals in 68 international matches. From 2017 to 2018, he also managed the Azerbaijan national team.
Gurbanov has won many awards throughout his career. He has won a total of 14 trophies. Five of these he won as a player, and nine he won as a manager.

Playing Career: Scoring Goals
Gurbanov began his football journey with Kur. He played for many different clubs during his career. Some of these clubs include Mertskhali Ozurgeti, Daşqın Zaqatala, Turan Tovuz, and Neftchi Baku. He also played for clubs in Russia like Dinamo Stavropol and Fakel Voronezh.
In the 1996–97 season, Gurbanov was the top scorer in the Azerbaijan Premier League while playing for Neftchi. He scored an impressive 25 goals that season. In 2003, he was named Azerbaijan's Player of the Year. His last club as a player was Inter Baku.
International Career: Representing Azerbaijan
Gurbanov played for the Azerbaijan national team in their very first match on September 17, 1992. He became a key player for his country. By January 2006, he had scored 14 goals in 68 international matches. This makes him the all-time leading goal scorer for the national team, which is a fantastic achievement!
Managerial Career: Leading Teams to Victory
After he stopped playing football, Gurbanov became the sport director for the club Inter. In the summer of 2006, he was chosen to be the head coach of Neftchi Baku.
In 2008, he became the head coach of Qarabağ FK. Under his leadership, Qarabağ FK has achieved great success. In 2010, he became the most successful Azerbaijani manager in European football competitions, with 16 wins.
In May 2014, he led Qarabağ to win their second Azerbaijani league title. This was a huge moment for the club, as it had been 21 years since their last league win. In July 2014, Qarabağ qualified for the 2014–15 UEFA Europa League group stage. This made them only the second Azerbaijani team to reach this stage in a European competition.
A big highlight of his managerial career came in 2017. Qarabağ FK, managed by Gurbanov, became the first Azerbaijani team ever to reach the group stages of the UEFA Champions League. This is one of the biggest football competitions in the world!
On November 3, 2017, Gurbanov was also appointed manager of the Azerbaijan national football team. However, he resigned from this role a year later, on December 8, 2018.
Personal Life
Gurbanov comes from a football family. His brother, Musa Gurbanov, was also a former Azerbaijani footballer. Gurbanov is also the father of Azerbaijan national team player Musa Gurbanli.
In 2012, Gurbanov took part in a campaign to help stop domestic violence. This shows his commitment to important social issues.
