History of Guthrie Center

Guthrie Center was first planned out in 1856. This process is called "platting," which means creating a map that divides land into lots for building. The city was named after Captain Edwin B. Guthrie. He was an important person who served as the first justice of the peace in Fort Madison.

Captain Guthrie also fought as a volunteer in the Mexican-American War. On June 20, 1847, he was hurt while protecting a large amount of money (over $350,000 in gold and silver coins). The railroad reached Guthrie Center in 1879, which helped the town grow. The city officially became a town (was "incorporated") in 1880.
