Early Life and First Steps in Acting

Gérard Xavier Marcel Depardieu was born on December 27, 1948, in Châteauroux, France. He was the third of six children in a working-class family. His mother, Anne, was a stay-at-home mom, and his father, René, was a metal worker.

Growing up, Depardieu spent a lot of time on the streets. He left school when he was 13. During his teenage years, he worked at a print shop and did some boxing.

When he was 16, a friend named Michel Pilorgé suggested they move to Paris to become actors. Depardieu agreed and went with him. In Paris, he started taking acting classes at the Théâtre National Populaire. A teacher noticed him and asked him to perform, which sparked his passion for acting.

He continued his acting studies with teacher Jean-Laurent Cochet. To improve his speaking, he also took special therapy. He became friends with actress Élisabeth Guignot, who later became his wife. She introduced him to people in the entertainment world.
