Haden is a small town in the countryside of Queensland, Australia. It's part of the Toowoomba Region. In 2021, about 235 people lived in Haden.
Geography
Haden is a small country town. It is about 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of Toowoomba. It is also about 185 kilometres (115 miles) northwest of Brisbane.
The town sits high up on the Great Dividing Range. This means it often has many windy days. You can find a beautiful lookout point on the Haden-Maclagan Road. It is located to the west of the town.
History
Early Beginnings and the Cemetery
In 1889, the Queensland Government set aside land for a cemetery. This was meant for the nearby town of Goombungee. However, the ground was too hard to dig graves.
So, in 1894, a new cemetery area was chosen. This new spot is now inside Haden. The first person buried there was Edith Annie Lloyd, a 10-month-old baby, in July 1894. Even though it was for Goombungee, people from Haden also used it. By 1925, it was known as the Goombungee-Haden Cemetery. In 2008, the Toowoomba Regional Council took over looking after it.
How Haden Got Its Name
The area was first called Wahoon. This Aboriginal word means scrub turkey. When a train station was built here, it was named Haden railway station in 1912.
The station was named after Alice Elizabeth Ruth Paget. She was the wife of Walter Trueman Paget. He was in charge of railways in Queensland from 1908 to 1915. The town of Haden then took its name from the railway station.
Doctor's Creek School
In 1892, people decided to build a school in Doctor's Creek. Doctor's Creek Provisional School opened in January 1893. The first teacher was Mr. Ridler. The school building was 21 by 14 feet (6.4 by 4.3 metres). It was built by Mr. Maunder.
In 1900, it became Doctor's Creek State School. The school closed in 1963. The old teacher's house is still there today.
Town Life and Changes
Around the early 1900s, Haden was a busy town. It had many pubs and stores. When the railway arrived and Haden State School opened in 1912, the town grew even more. It became a good place to live. The land around Haden was perfect for raising cattle and dairy farming.
Over time, new technology came along. Also, the dairy farming industry changed. Because of this, the number of people living in Haden started to go down. Today, only a few farms still operate. Most farmers now focus on raising cattle and growing crops.
