Halstead is a small city located in Harvey County, Kansas, in the United States. It was named after Murat Halstead, a famous newspaper editor and writer during the American Civil War. In 2020, about 2,179 people lived in Halstead.

History of Halstead


For thousands of years, the land that is now Kansas was home to Native American tribes. In 1803, the United States bought most of this land as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Kansas became a U.S. territory in 1854 and then the 34th U.S. state in 1861. Harvey County, where Halstead is located, was created in 1872.
Halstead was officially planned out in 1873. The first post office opened here in April 1873. Halstead became an official city in 1877.
A famous doctor named Arthur E. Hertzler spent much of his life helping people in Halstead. He founded the Hertzler Hospital, which was a clinic and hospital for everyone in the area. It later became known simply as the Halstead Hospital.
