History of Hampton
Early Days of the City
Hampton was first settled by people in 1859. It officially became a "Town" in 1870. Later, in 1925, it was officially recognized as the "City of Hampton." Back then, it was an important spot where two different train lines, the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway and the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, met. Both lines had stations in Hampton.
In the mid-1990s, Hampton added a small part of U.S. Highway 301 to its city limits. This was done to collect money from traffic tickets given to drivers on that highway. At one point, the city had a lot of police officers compared to its small population.
Changes and Improvements in 2013–2014
Around 2013 and 2014, the city of Hampton faced some challenges. State auditors found several issues with how the city was managing its money and following laws. For example, in 2012, the city collected a lot of money from traffic tickets on a short stretch of U.S. Highway 301. This gave Hampton a reputation as a "speed trap."
Because of these issues, state leaders looked into the city's operations. Many city officials stepped down during this time. State representatives visited Hampton in March 2014 to see if the problems were being fixed. They decided to let Hampton remain a city because it took steps to solve the issues. Hampton removed the highway section from its city limits and stopped its police force. The city also worked to fix its budget problems and improved how its city council meetings were run.
