History of Hanover Park
The area now known as Hanover Park has a long history. In 1836, people could travel by stagecoach along Lake Trail, which is now Lake Street. This route went all the way to a town called Galena.
How Ontarioville Got Its Name
In 1872, a railroad company built train tracks through the area. A man named Edwin Bartlett gave land for a train station. He and another person, Luther Bartlett, each had stations named "Bartlett." To avoid confusion, Edwin changed his station's name to "Ontario" in 1873. This name came from a story that the area was on an old Native American trail between Lake Ontario and Green Bay, Wisconsin.
A post office was set up in Ontarioville in 1873. Later, in 1982, Ontarioville became part of the larger village of Hanover Park.
