The Harford Mall is a popular shopping mall located in Bel Air, Maryland, USA. It's owned by a company called CBL & Associates Properties. You can find it near where two main roads, Maryland Route 24 and U.S. Route 1, meet. This is about 32 miles (51 km) north of Baltimore. The biggest store, also known as an anchor store, at the mall is Macy's. Harford Mall is special because it's the only shopping mall in Harford County, Maryland. Interestingly, it was built on the land where the Bel Air Racetrack used to be.

Mall History

The Harford Mall first opened its doors in 1973. It was built by a company called Mid Atlantic Realty Trust. When it first opened, it had two main anchor stores: E.J. Korvette and Montgomery Ward.

Changes Over Time

Over the years, the stores at the mall changed. E.J. Korvette became Hutzler's, then Hecht's, and finally, it became Macy's. Another early store was an F.W. Woolworth Company store, which was located in the center of the mall. Later, Sears took the place of Montgomery Ward.

In 2003, the Harford Mall was bought by CBL & Associates Property, Inc.. Another store called Hochschild Kohn opened in October 1977 during the mall's first expansion. This area later became the mall's original food court.

Modern Updates

Between 2006 and 2007, the mall got a big makeover. The inside, including the main center area, was updated. The outside of the mall also got a fresh new look. The old indoor food court was removed to make space for more stores.

A new "food court" area was built outside the mall. Many new restaurants moved into these outdoor spots, like Qdoba, Bonefish Grill, Five Guys, Vaccaros Italian Pastries, and Red Robin. More popular clothing stores, such as Hollister and American Eagle, were also added.

Recent Store Changes

In 2013, a long-time store, Old Navy, moved out of the mall. It relocated to a new shopping center nearby. The Shoe Department Encore then took its place. In early 2019, Payless Shoe Source and Charlotte Russe also closed their locations at Harford Mall.

Other places to eat inside the mall include The Greene Turtle, Friendly's, Sino Wok, and Pretzel Twister. In February 2020, Sears, which was one of the mall's two main anchor stores, closed down. This happened because the Sears company had filed for bankruptcy.

The Harford Mall Annex

Right across the street from the main Harford Mall, there's another group of stores called "The Harford Mall Annex." These stores are on Boulton Street and face one of the entrances to Macy's. Even though they are not inside the mall building, they are listed on the Harford Mall's website directory. Stores in "The Annex" include Office Depot, Dollar Tree, PetsMart and Banfield Pet Hospital, and Best Buy.
