The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park is a special place in Maryland, USA. It covers about 480 acres of land. This park celebrates the amazing life of Harriet Tubman. She was a former slave who became a brave activist. She helped many people escape slavery using the Underground Railroad before the American Civil War.

This park was first created by President Barack Obama in 2013. It was called the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument. Later, in 2014, the part managed by the National Park Service became a National Historical Park. Other parts are managed by the Fish and Wildlife Service. These areas are part of the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge.

What the Park Includes

The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park includes important places. These sites are found near Cambridge, Maryland, Windy Hill, and Preston. They are in Dorchester County, Talbot, and Caroline counties. These places were very important in Harriet Tubman's life.

The park currently includes 480 acres of land. This land is known as the Jacob Jackson Home site. The park was officially set up by a law in December 2014. This law also allowed the park to get more land. An additional 4,207.54 acres in Dorchester, Caroline, and Talbot counties could be added. The Jacob Jackson site was given to the government by The Conservation Fund. This helped create the National Monument, which later became the National Historical Park. The same law also created another Harriet Tubman National Historical Park in Auburn, New York.

How the Park Was Created

Before these National Historical Parks were made, the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument was created. President Barack Obama established it in Dorchester County, Maryland. This happened on March 25, 2013.

Later, a law was passed in December 2014. This law said that the historical park and the part of the monument managed by the National Park Service should be one unit. This unit would be called the Harriet Tubman Underground National Historical Park. A sister park, the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park, was also created. This park is in Auburn and Fleming, New York. It was established on January 10, 2017.
