Harrison is a small village in Sioux County, Nebraska, in the United States. It is the main town, or county seat, of Sioux County. In 2020, about 239 people lived there.

A Look Back: Harrison's History
Harrison was first called Bowen. It was planned out in 1886 when a railroad line, the Fremont, Elkhorn, & Missouri Valley Railroad, reached that spot.
In 1887, the town's name was changed to Harrison. This was done to honor Benjamin Harrison, who later became a U.S. President. Harrison officially became an incorporated village in 1889.

Harrison is located on the American Great Plains, which are large, flat grasslands. The village covers about 0.31 square miles (0.79 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.
Nebraska's Highest Town
At about 4,876 feet (1,486 meters) above sea level, Harrison is the highest town in all of Nebraska. This is why it's known as "Nebraska's Top Town"!

Fun Places to Visit: Area Attractions

Just 25 minutes south of Harrison, you can visit Agate Fossil Beds National Monument. This amazing place is managed by the National Park Service.
Discovering Ancient Fossils
The monument is famous for its many well-preserved Miocene mammal fossils. These fossils are about 20 million years old! They are some of the best examples of ancient mammals ever found.
Plains Indian History
The museum at the monument also has over 500 items from the Cook Collection. These are artifacts from Plains Indian tribes. They originally came from the Agate Springs Ranch, which was a working cattle ranch owned by Harold J. Cook. The Cook Homestead, also known as the Bone Cabin Complex, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Roads and Highways
US 20 (U.S. Route 20) - This road goes east and west through Harrison. It's part of the "Bridges to Buttes Byway."
N-29 (Nebraska Highway 29) - This road goes south out of Harrison and is also known as Main Street.
Famous People from Harrison
- Dwight Griswold was born in Harrison. He was the Governor of Nebraska from 1940 to 1946. Later, he became a U.S. Senator from 1952 to 1954.
