Harry Ronald Neil Primrose, also known as Harry Dalmeny, is a British nobleman and a top auctioneer. He holds many old family titles, including the Earl of Rosebery. He is also the Chairman of Sotheby's in the United Kingdom, which is a very famous auction house. His family owns Dalmeny House in Scotland. He is also a Deputy Lieutenant for Midlothian, which is a special role in the county.

Harry Primrose was born in 1967. He is the son of Neil Primrose, who was the 7th Earl of Rosebery. His family has a long history. His great-grandfather, Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, was even a Prime Minister of the United Kingdom! His great-grandmother, Hannah de Rothschild, was one of the richest women in Britain at the time.

The Primrose family has owned Dalmeny House in Scotland for a long time. They also used to own another grand house called Mentmore Towers until 1977.

Harry Primrose went to school at the Dragon School in Oxford. Then he studied at Eton College, which is a well-known school. After that, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge to study art history.

Career as an Auctioneer

Harry Dalmeny started working at Sotheby's in 1990. He joined the department that sells items from large country houses. By 2000, he became a director at Sotheby's. He later became chairman of Sotheby's Olympia from 2003 to 2007.

He also took charge of sales that involved items from a single owner in 2006. In 2007, he became the deputy chairman of Sotheby's UK. Finally, in 2017, he became the Chairman of Sotheby's in the United Kingdom.

As a director of country house sales, Lord Dalmeny has led many important auctions. He has been the auctioneer for some of the biggest sales in Europe. For example, he led the sale of items from the Duke of Devonshire's home, Chatsworth House. In 2004, he also sold a famous painting called The Singing Butler by Jack Vettriano for a record £744,800 at Hopetoun House.

In 2013, he had the special experience of riding in the Queen's carriage at Royal Ascot.

In 2014, his family sold a painting by J. M. W. Turner called Rome, From Mount Aventine. They sold it for £30.3 million. This money was used to help pay for important repair work on Dalmeny House. This painting was bought by his great-grandfather, Archibald Primrose, in 1878.

In 2019, Dalmeny led the auction of a painting by Claude Monet called Meules. It sold for over US$110.7 million at Sotheby's New York. This set a new record for an Impressionist painting.

In 2001, Dalmeny sold a famous portrait of George Washington by Gilbert Stuart. This painting had been on display at the National Portrait Gallery in the United States since 1968. To make sure the gallery could keep it, a donor paid the US$20 million that Dalmeny asked for.

Personal Life

In 1994, Lord Dalmeny married Caroline Daglish. She used to work for politicians. They lived in both London and Scotland. In Scotland, he has a house and a farm in the Moffat Hills. They have five children together.

In 2022, Lord Dalmeny married Harriet Clapham.
