Hastings is a town located in Oswego County, New York, in the United States. In 2010, about 9,450 people lived there. The town was named after Hastings Curtiss, who was an important person and a member of the New York State Assembly back in 1824.
Hastings is found on the southern edge of Oswego County. Major roads like U.S. Route 11 and Interstate 81 pass right through the town.

Exploring Hastings' Past
Hastings was the very first town settled in Oswego County. This happened in 1789 when Oliver Stevens built a simple house near an old fort called Fort Brewerton. Stevens used this spot to trade with Native Americans. He also ran a place like a tavern for people who traveled by boat on the nearby river and lake. This area was first known as "Breda."
How Hastings Was Formed
The town of Hastings was officially created in 1825. It was formed from a part of another town called Constantia. In the early days, the main jobs in Hastings involved cutting down trees (lumbering) and making things out of wood.
Historic Schoolhouse
A special building called the Carley's Mills Schoolhouse is located in Hastings. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This means it's an important historical site worth preserving.
