History of Hatton
Hatton started because of the Northern Pacific Railway. This railroad built a station here. They also added a section house and a pump house for their workers. Before 1890, the station was called Twin Wells. This name came from two wells that provided water for the railroad employees.
In 1890, James Bronson opened the first store in the area. At the same time, a post office was set up. It was given the name "Hatton." The town's name came from two people. It combined parts of the last names of Belle Sutton, the first postmistress, and John Hackett, her husband. John Hackett worked for the Northern Pacific Railway. Later, in 1897, Otis Algoe bought Bronson's store and became the new postmaster.
Hatton began to grow more after 1901. James Bronson officially planned out the town on April 30, 1901. By then, Hatton had grown quite a bit. It had four big warehouses, five stores, two hotels, a bank, and a school. Hatton officially became an incorporated town on July 31, 1907. This meant it had its own local government.
