Hawawshi facts for kids
Hawawshi (sometimes called hawwaoshi) is a yummy, traditional Egyptian dish. Imagine a pita bread pocket filled with tasty minced meat. This meat is mixed with onions, pepper, and parsley. Sometimes, spicy chilies are added for an extra kick!
There are two main types of hawawshi. The "baladi" (standard) kind is made by stuffing flat Egyptian bread with the meat mix. Then, it's baked until golden and delicious.
The other type is Alexandrian hawawshi. In Alexandria, the meat and spices are placed between two round layers of dough. This is also baked in an oven. Alexandrian hawawshi often uses different spices, giving it a unique flavor.
Hawawshi is popular in many countries in the Middle East and North Africa. In places like the Levant, it's made with saj bread and has hot peppers inside. In Algeria, it's called "muhajib" and is eaten with soup or a fresh yogurt salad.
Many Egyptian families make hawawshi at home. You can also find it in some restaurants, often as a take-away meal. The price usually depends on how big it is and how much meat is used.
History of Hawawshi
Hawawshi was first created in 1971. An Egyptian butcher named Ahmed al-Hawawsh invented this dish. He sold it from his small shop in the Souk Al-Tawfik area of Cairo.
From Cairo, hawawshi quickly became popular all over Egypt. After al-Hawawsh passed away, the dish became super famous. It's especially loved in the Sharqia Governorate in the Nile Delta. Many people say you can find the very best hawawshi there!
