Early life and dance beginnings
Heather Morris was born in Thousand Oaks, California, and grew up in Scottsdale, Arizona. She started dancing when she was very young. Heather competed in many dance styles, including jazz, tap, and contemporary dance. When she was 14, her father passed away. After finishing high school at Desert Mountain High School, where she was even homecoming queen, she went to Arizona State University for a year. Then, she moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream of becoming a professional dancer.
Career highlights
Heather's first big chance came in 2006 on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance. She made it through "Vegas Week" but didn't quite make it into the top 20 dancers.
Even though she didn't win, Heather kept working hard on her dance career. Her big break happened in 2007 when she became one of Beyoncé's backup dancers for "The Beyoncé Experience" world tour. After that, she danced with Beyoncé again for the "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)" song promotions. This included performing on big shows like the American Music Awards and Saturday Night Live. She also danced with Beyoncé and Tina Turner at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards in 2008.
Later, she had a small part in the movie Fired Up. There, she met a choreographer named Zach Woodlee. He then asked Heather to dance in other shows he was working on, like Eli Stone and Bedtime Stories. This eventually led her to her famous role as Brittany on Glee.
In 2010, Heather became the Celebrity Style Ambassador for FLIRT! Cosmetics. In 2011, she also starred in a back-to-school commercial for Staples Canada, where she showed off her dancing skills.
Starring in Glee
Heather was taking acting classes when Zach Woodlee asked her to teach the "Single Ladies" dance to the actors on Glee. At the same time, the show was looking for another cheerleader, and Heather ended up getting the role of Brittany. At first, Brittany was a background character who didn't speak much. But the writers soon realized Heather was great at delivering funny one-liners. Her role grew, and people started to notice how hilarious she was.
Fans especially loved the close friendship between Brittany Pierce and Santana Lopez on the show. Their characters became very popular, and many viewers enjoyed watching their story unfold. Heather's role became much bigger in the second season of Glee. She was a main character in the episode "Britney/Brittany", which was a tribute to Britney Spears. In this episode, Heather sang "I'm a Slave 4 U" by herself and sang "Me Against the Music" with Naya Rivera, who played Santana. She had many more singing and dancing solos throughout the series.
In season 3, Brittany and Santana's characters continued their strong bond. Heather had a big part in the episode "Prom-asaurus". In the final episode of that season, Brittany revealed she wouldn't be graduating because of her grades.
During the 2011 Glee Tour, Heather performed Britney Spears' song "I'm a Slave 4 U" live. She also had a special dance moment with her co-star Harry Shum Jr..
In 2013, it was announced that Heather would not be a regular cast member for Glee's fifth season. However, she returned for the show's 100th episode and the final episode of season five. Heather also appeared in five episodes of the sixth and final season, including the very last episode of the series.
Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Dancer
In 2017, Heather Morris joined season 24 of Dancing with the Stars. Some people criticized this because she was already a professional dancer. However, the show's producers explained that she didn't have experience with ballroom dancing or partnering. She was paired with professional dancer Maksim Chmerkovskiy. She was eliminated from the show even after getting the first perfect score of the season, which surprised many fans.
In 2022, Heather won the second season of The Masked Dancer in the UK. She performed as the character "Scissors." Since the show was later canceled, Heather was the very last celebrity to be unmasked on the show. She closed the entire series by dancing to "Respect" by Aretha Franklin.
HEAT Faculty
Since 2020, Heather Morris has been part of the HEAT Convention and Competition Faculty. In this role, she teaches special dance classes and works as a judge for dance competitions.
Personal life
Heather Morris married Taylor Hubbell on May 16, 2015. They started dating when he was a college baseball player. They had gone to the same high school in Arizona but didn't know each other then. They began their relationship after Heather moved to Los Angeles and Taylor contacted her online. Heather has said that marrying Taylor and having children with him was very important to her. They have two sons together.
