Heaton's Past
Heaton has a long history, dating back to the 12th century. Back then, it was known as a "township." A township was like a small local area or village. The name Heaton comes from old English words meaning "enclosed ground on high land."
The Heaton family was very important in this area. They lived in places called Heaton Old Hall and Heaton New Hall. This family even gave their name to the township of Heaton.
How Heaton is Governed
For a long time, Heaton was part of a larger area called the Hundred of Salford. This was a way to divide land for legal reasons. Heaton was also one of ten townships in the ecclesiastical parish of Deane. An ecclesiastical parish was a church-based area.
In 1866, Heaton became a civil parish. This meant it had its own local government. Later, it became part of the County Borough of Bolton in 1898. This was a bigger local government area.
Since 1974, Heaton has been part of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton. This is the local council that manages services for Bolton and its surrounding areas. Heaton is part of the Heaton and Lostock Ward. A "ward" is a local area that elects people to represent it on the council. Three councillors represent this ward in Bolton Town Hall. Heaton is also part of the Bolton West area for national elections. This area is represented in the House of Commons by a MP.
Where is Heaton?

Christ Church Heaton
