Where is Hendon?

Hendon is located about 25 kilometres (16 miles) north of Warwick. It's also about 160 kilometres (100 miles) southwest of Brisbane, which is the capital city of Queensland.

Hendon's Story

The town of Hendon started to grow because of the Southern railway line. This railway line opened to Hendon railway station on 11 March 1869. It connected Hendon to places like Gowrie Junction near Toowoomba. Over time, the railway line was extended further, reaching New South Wales by 1887.

The town got its name from the Hendon railway station. When it first opened in 1869, the station was actually called Allora. But in the mid-1870s, its name was changed to Hendon. This was because the station was about 5 kilometres (3 miles) away from the town of Allora. The name Hendon came from a settler who lived in the area.

The Hendon Post Office opened on 1 April 1877, helping people send and receive mail. It closed down in 1968.

A school called Hendon Provisional School opened on 5 June 1882. It later became Hendon State School. This school helped educate the children of the area for many years before it closed on 1 June 1954.

For a while, Hendon was a very important railway stop for the nearby town of Allora. Allora was about four miles northeast of Hendon. The roads between Allora and the railway were often muddy and hard to use, especially after heavy rain. So, the people of Allora worked hard to get their own railway connection. A new railway line was built from Hendon to Allora, opening on 21 April 1897. This made it much easier to transport goods and people.

In its early days, Hendon had a few important buildings. There was the Railway Hotel, a hall for community events, the primary school, and even a golf course. The hotel was right next to the railway station. The school building was sadly destroyed by fire in 1926, but a new one was moved from another town and opened in 1927. However, as time went on, fewer people lived in Hendon. The hall was moved to a farm, and the hotel and school buildings eventually disappeared.

By 2011, most of the old railway buildings and structures were gone, except for the railway lines themselves. Even the railway line that went from Allora to Goomburra closed down in the 1960s.

Today, Hendon is slowly growing again. Some new homes have been built. There is also a steel merchant business in the town, which is the main commercial business there now.
