History of Hendricks

The city of Hendricks got its name from an important person in American history. A post office opened here in 1884. That same year, the city was named after Thomas A. Hendricks. He was elected as the 21st Vice President of the United States in 1884.

Geography and Location

Hendricks is located in the beautiful state of Minnesota. It covers an area of about 2.51 square kilometers (0.97 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a very small amount of water.

The city sits on the northeast shore of Lake Hendricks. This lake is also the starting point of the Lac qui Parle River.

Just 3 miles northwest of Hendricks, you'll find the Singsaas Lutheran Church. Norwegian settlers built this church on October 26, 1874. It is now over 135 years old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This makes it one of the oldest "Prairie Churches" in the country that still holds weekly services. Every Christmas, the church creates a CD of its annual Christmas program.

Red Barn Theater

In December 2014, the Red Barn Theater opened in Hendricks. On its opening night, 230 people came to watch the movie Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. This was a big event because Hendricks hadn't had a movie theater since 1972!
