The Henrietta Brewer House is a historic building in Robbinston, Maine, United States. It was first called The Cottage House. Today, it is known as the Redclyffe Shore Motel. This special house was built between 1861 and 1863. It is one of the best examples of a building style called Gothic Revival architecture in Down East Maine. Because of its importance, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Some small cabins built near the house, along the Passamaquoddy Bay, are used as motel rooms for visitors.

What Does the Henrietta Brewer House Look Like?

The Henrietta Brewer House sits on a hill. From here, you can see the St. Croix River. It is about 12 miles (19 km) south of Calais on United States Route 1. The house is made of wood and has two and a half stories. It has an interesting, uneven shape with many parts.

The roof has steep, pointed sections called gables. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The house shows off many fancy Gothic Revival details. These include pointed windows, which look like a lancet arch. The gables have decorative wooden trim called vergeboard. You can also see small, pointed decorations called finials at the top of the gables. The roof has two main sections that run north to south. These are connected by another section across the middle. There are also dormer windows sticking out from different parts of the roof. Inside the house, you will find beautiful finishes in the Greek Revival style.

Who Built the Henrietta Brewer House?

Building the Henrietta Brewer House began in 1861 and finished in 1863. It was built for Henrietta Brewer. She was the wife of John Nehemiah Marks Brewer. His own house, the John N.M. Brewer House, is a Greek Revival style home. It stands a short distance to the south.

The Henrietta Brewer House is a unique example of the high Victorian Gothic style in eastern Maine. Other similar houses in Calais, like the Gilmore House and the George Washburn House, have a less formal style. Their style is often called Carpenter Gothic.
