Henry Jones Thaddeus (1859 – 1929) was a talented Irish artist. He was known for painting realistic pictures and portraits of people. He was born and trained in County Cork, Ireland.
A Young Artist's Journey
Henry Thaddeus Jones was born in 1859. He started studying art at the Cork School of Art when he was just ten years old. There, he learned from a painter named James Brenan.
Henry was very good at art. He won the Taylor Prize in 1878. This award helped him travel to London to continue his studies. He won the prize again in 1879, which allowed him to study in Paris at the famous Académie Julian.

His first important painting was called Le retour du braconnier (which means "The Wounded Poacher"). This painting was shown at a very famous art exhibition in Paris, called the Paris Salon, in 1881. It was even hung "on the line," meaning it was placed at eye-level. This was a big honor for an artist!
Painting Important People
Henry Jones Thaddeus became well-known for painting portraits. He was asked to paint many important people. He even received special requests to paint two portraits of Pope Pius X, who was the leader of the Catholic Church.
He also became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. This shows that he was recognized for his achievements beyond just painting.
Later Life
In his later years, Henry Jones Thaddeus moved to the Isle of Wight, an island off the coast of England. He passed away there in Ryde on May 1, 1929.
He wrote a book about his life called Recollections of a Court Painter. He wrote this book when he was retired and living in California.
