Henry Thompson Sloane (born December 1, 1845 – died September 18, 1937) was an American businessman. He lived during a time known as the Gilded Age, which was a period of fast economic growth in the United States.

Early Life and Education

Henry Sloane was born in New York City on December 1, 1845. He was the fourth son of William Sloane and Euphemia Douglas Sloane. His parents had moved to the U.S. from Kilmarnock, Scotland.

Henry had several siblings, including John Sloane and William Douglas Sloane. His sister Euphemia married Edmund Coffin.

Henry went to Yale College in 1866. However, he had to leave during his senior year because he was not well. Even though he left early, Yale still gave him his degree in 1869.

Henry Sloane began working at his family's business when he was just fifteen years old. His father had started the company in 1843. It sold carpets and furniture.

In 1852, Henry's uncle, John W. Sloane, joined the company. The business was then renamed W. & J. Sloane.

Henry later became a full member of the firm. In 1870, he moved to San Francisco to open a new branch of the company in California. When the company officially became a corporation in 1891, Henry became a director. He stayed on the board until he passed away. He also served as a senior director and treasurer for the company.

Henry Sloane made a generous donation of $515,000 to Yale University. This money was used to build a large physics laboratory. It was named the Sloane Physics Laboratory in honor of his father and brother.

Henry was also a member of several important clubs. These included the New York Yacht Club and the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. He was the oldest member of the Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club when he died.

In 1880, Henry Sloane married Jessie Ann Robbins. Jessie was the daughter of Daniel Cook Robbins, who was a partner in a large drug company. Henry and Jessie had two daughters together:

  • Jessie M. Sloane (1883–1968)
  • Emily Eleanor Sloane (1890–1981)

In 1889, Henry and Jessie divorced. Jessie later married Perry Belmont, who was a U.S. Representative and a former U.S. Minister to Spain. Henry Sloane never remarried after his divorce.

Henry Sloane passed away on September 18, 1937, in Southampton, New York. He was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery in the Bronx after a funeral at St. Bartholomew's Church.

Family and Descendants

After they married, Henry and Jessie Sloane lived on West 54th Street in Manhattan. Henry later built a new home at 9 East 72nd Street on the Upper East Side of New York City. This large house was designed in a beautiful French Renaissance style. After his divorce, he rented the house out and later sold it.

Through his daughter Jessie, Henry was the grandfather of Diana Dodge. Through his daughter Emily, he was the grandfather of Amicie de Nicolay, Marie de La Grange, and Henry-Louis de La Grange. Henry-Louis de La Grange became a famous musicologist and biographer of the composer Gustav Mahler.
