Youngji's Journey to Stardom
Early Training and Education
Before becoming a famous singer, Youngji went to the School of Performing Arts Seoul. This school helps young people learn how to perform. She trained with different entertainment companies to become an idol. She was almost part of a new girl group but left before they started. Later, she joined DSP Media, which is the company that manages Kara.
Joining Kara and First Solo Steps
In May 2014, two members left the group Kara. So, DSP Media created a TV show called Kara Project. This show was a competition where seven young trainees, including Youngji, tried to become the new member of Kara. Youngji impressed many viewers and won the competition on July 1, 2014. She became the newest member of Kara!
After joining Kara, Youngji also started appearing on TV shows by herself. In September 2014, she joined the second season of Roommate. On this show, celebrities live together in a house. Youngji became known for her unique, quiet laugh. Her bandmate, Goo Hara, even said that Youngji brought a fresh, youthful energy to Kara.
In December 2014, Youngji joined another TV show called Hitmaker Season 2. She became part of a special girl group called Cham So Nyeo. This group released their first song and music video, "Magic Words," in February 2015.
Solo Career and Acting Roles
In January 2016, some of the original Kara members left DSP Media. Youngji stayed with the company and began to focus on her solo music career. The other members of Kara have said that the group did not officially break up and hope to make new music together in the future.
Youngji also started acting in TV dramas. In May 2016, she had a supporting role in the TV show Another Miss Oh. She also hosted and appeared on many other TV programs.
In December 2016, Youngji was revealed as a special "hidden member" for a new co-ed (mixed-gender) group called K.A.R.D. She promoted their first song, "OH NA NA."
On August 25, 2017, Youngji released her very first solo song called Memory Clock. She also sang a song called Longing for a project called 'with dog' in December 2017.
Youngji continued her journey with DSP Media and renewed her contract in August 2021. In September 2023, she officially made her solo debut with her first single album, Toi Toi Toi. The main song from this album was "L.O.V.E."
After ten years with DSP Media, Youngji left the company on September 5, 2024. Just a few days later, on September 9, 2024, she signed a new contract with SM C&C, another big entertainment company.
