Early Life and School
Herman Asaribab was born on June 10, 1964, in Jayapura. This city is the capital of a region then called West Irian in Indonesia. Both his parents were from the Biak Numfor tribe.
He started school at an elementary school in Jayapura and finished in 1977. Then, he went to the 2nd State Junior High School in Jayapura, graduating in 1981. He finished high school at the 414th State High School in Abepura in 1984.
Later, while serving in the military, Asaribab also went to Sunan Giri University. He studied there from 1992 to 1995 and earned a degree in social studies.
Military Journey
Herman Asaribab had a long and successful career in the Indonesian Army. He started his military training in 1985.
Military Training
In 1985, Asaribab joined the Indonesian Military Academy in Magelang. He worked hard and graduated from the academy in 1988. On July 26, 1988, President Suharto officially made him a first lieutenant.
After this, he continued to learn and train. He attended several other military courses:
- General Course for Infantry (1988-1989)
- Advanced Officers Course (1993 and 1998)
- Indonesian Army Command and General Staff College (2000)
- Indonesian National Armed Forces Command and General Staff College (2003)
Leading as an Officer
Asaribab's first job was in Kediri. From 1989 to 1992, he led a group of soldiers in the 521st Infantry Battalion. After that, he moved to lead a special escort company for the 5th Military Regional Command/Brawijaya. In 1995, he was moved again to the 527th Infantry Battalion in Lumajang.
After more training in 1998, Asaribab went to Ambon. He became the Deputy Commander of the 731st Infantry Battalion until 2000. For a short time, he helped with training at the 16th Military Regional Command/Pattimura. He also briefly served as the Chief of Staff of the Ambon Military District before moving to Bandung.
In Bandung, Asaribab worked in the Indonesian Army Command and General Staff College, first in information and then in security. After finishing his education in 2003, he returned to Papua. From 2004 to 2005, he helped with intelligence for the 17th Military Regional Command/Cenderawasih. In 2005, he became the commander of the 751st Infantry Battalion in that region.
In 2007, Asaribab moved to Jakarta. He led the Non-Commissioned Officer Academy in the Jayakarta Military Regional Command. In 2008, he became the Commander of the East Jakarta Military District. In 2009, he worked at the Indonesian Army Headquarters, helping with personal affairs.
In 2010, Asaribab returned to his hometown, Jayapura. He became the Commander of the 20th Infantry Brigade. From 2011 to 2013, he was in Bandung, teaching about firearms at the Infantry Arms Center. In 2013, he went back to the Cenderawasih Military Regional Command to lead the Praja Wira Yakthi Military Resort.
While he was leading the Praja Wira Yakthi Military Resort, the Governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe, offered money to send Asaribab to a special military college in the United States. This was the same college that former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had attended. The Governor wanted to help more Papuan people become high-ranking officers in the military and police.
Becoming a General
On March 4, 2015, Herman Asaribab was promoted from colonel to brigadier general. This was a big achievement, as he was only the second Papuan to become a flag officer (a general) in the Indonesian Army.
As a brigadier general, he first served as the Deputy Commander of the Infantry Arms Center. A few months later, he became the Deputy Commander of the Indonesian Army Command and General Staff College.
On September 10, 2015, Asaribab became the Chief of Staff of the Cenderawasih Regional Military Command. On December 4, 2017, he moved back to Jakarta to work as an expert advisor for the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army. In 2018, Asaribab was promoted again to Major General. He continued to assist the Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army.
On March 25, 2019, Asaribab took command of the 12th Regional Military Command/Tanjungpura. He held this position until December 7, 2019.
On August 30, 2019, the Commander of the Indonesian Armed Forces, Hadi Tjahjanto, officially made Asaribab the commander of the 17th Military Regional Command/Cenderawasih. This appointment was seen as a way to use a "cultural approach" to help solve issues in Papua, especially after the 2019 Papua protests. Asaribab officially started this role on September 17, 2019.
On November 18, 2020, Asaribab was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff of the Indonesian Army. Because of this new role, he was promoted to Lieutenant General on December 8, 2020. However, he was never officially sworn into this position because he was receiving medical treatment.
Passing Away
Herman Asaribab passed away on December 14, 2020. He had been getting medical care at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital since his appointment as Deputy Chief of Staff. Doctors said he died due to an illness, but they did not share specific details.
His body was flown from Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta to Theys Hiyo Eluay Airport in Jayapura on December 15, 2020. Many important officials, including the Police Chief of Papua, welcomed his casket. The regional secretary of Papua asked people in Papua to fly flags at half-mast to show respect for Asaribab.
The Kompas newspaper, a very well-known newspaper in Indonesia, reported that Asaribab's death was one of the most talked-about news stories in the country.

Herman Asaribab married Francisca Diana Marga Pratiwi in 1995. They had three children: Bernadethe Yuliana Asaribab, Immaculhata Selinida Asaribab, and Agnes Dormina Asaribab. Sadly, Pratiwi passed away on October 23, 2005.
