Hialeah Gardens started small, as a tourist camp owned by Walter C. Ohlerts. In December 1948, 26 people voted, and Hialeah Gardens officially became a town.
In February 1949, the town made its first rules for building, traffic, and even hunting. For a long time, Hialeah Gardens was a rural area. One of its main businesses was raising horses. This changed in 1968. The city then made a big plan to guide its growth.
Only a few small shops were along Okeechobee Road back then. But because the city was close to major roads like Okeechobee Road (U.S. Route 27) and the Palmetto Expressway, it grew very fast. Hialeah Gardens became one of the fastest-growing cities in the county.
