Hilarion Capucci (Arabic: هيلاريون كابوتشي; 2 March 1922 – 1 January 2017) was a Syrian Catholic bishop. He served as the archbishop of Caesarea in the Melkite Greek Catholic Church. He was known for his support of the Palestinian people.

Early Life and Becoming a Bishop

Hilarion Capucci was born in Aleppo, Syria. His parents were Bashir Capucci and Chafika Rabbath. He studied at St. Anne's Seminary in Jerusalem.

On July 20, 1947, he became a priest. Later, on July 30, 1965, he was chosen and made an archbishop. During his time as archbishop, he spoke out against the Israeli presence in Palestine. He supported the Palestinian cause.

Arrest and Time in Prison

On August 18, 1974, Israeli security forces arrested Archbishop Capucci. He was accused of helping people by moving items across borders. An Israeli military court found him guilty. They said he used his special status as a diplomat to move things for a Palestinian group. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

The leader of the Melkite Church, Maximos V, spoke out against Capucci's arrest. He questioned why someone trying to help Arabs should be judged. He also said Israel had entered East Jerusalem illegally.

Archbishop Capucci's release was asked for by hijackers in two different events. These were the Kfar Yuval hostage crisis in 1975 and the Entebbe hostage crisis in 1976.

He was released two years later, in 1978. This happened because the Vatican stepped in to help. He had served four years of his sentence.

Helping During the Iran Hostage Crisis

Archbishop Capucci played an important part during the Iran hostage crisis. He visited the American hostages many times. In May 1980, he helped get the bodies of American soldiers released. These soldiers had died in a rescue mission accident.

Capucci also worked on a plan to free the hostages. However, this plan did not work out. A French newspaper published the story before Iran's Parliament could approve it.

Speaking Out Against War

Archbishop Capucci was against the Iraq War in 2003. He wrote the introduction for a book called Neo-Conned!: Just War Principles a Condemnation of War in Iraq. The book was written by John Sharpe.

Joining Aid Missions to Gaza

In 2009, Archbishop Capucci was on a ship from Lebanon going to Gaza. Israeli forces stopped this ship. The ship was trying to go through an area that Israel had blocked off by sea.

In May 2010, he joined another aid trip to the Gaza Strip. This was part of the Free Gaza Movement's aid flotilla. He was on the ship called Mavi Marmara. The Israeli Navy stopped this ship. Nine people died and many were hurt during this event. Capucci was held in Beersheba prison. He was then sent out of the country.

Honors from Countries

Several Muslim countries have honored Archbishop Capucci. These include Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, and Syria. They have even put his picture on postage stamps.

His Passing

On January 1, 2017, the Vatican announced that Archbishop Capucci had died. He passed away in Rome, Italy, at the age of 94.
