Hillfields is a lively area and a special part of north-east Bristol. When we talk about Hillfields, we often mean the 'ward' of Hillfields. A ward is like a local neighborhood or district used for elections and local government.
The Hillfields ward includes several smaller areas of Bristol. These are:
- Chester Park
- Hillfields East
- Hillfields North
- Hillfields West
- Lodge Hill
- Mayfield Park
- Speedwell
- Staple Hill Road South
Hillfields itself is a newer part of Bristol. It's located on the edge of Fishponds and started to grow a lot after the First World War. You can find it on the north side of Lodge Causeway.

A Look Back at Hillfields
How Hillfields Grew
Building new homes in Hillfields Park began in 1919. This was one of the first housing projects in Bristol built as part of a big plan to create more homes for people.
The area grew even more in 1922. This happened when a new paper and printing company, Elisha Smith Robinson, opened nearby in Filwood Road, Fishponds. The company even helped build houses on Maple Avenue for its new workers.
Schools and Famous Students
As more families moved in, new schools were needed. Hillfields Park Infant School opened its doors in 1927. The junior school followed shortly after, opening in 1929.
One of the most famous students to attend the junior school was Arthur Milton. He was an amazing athlete! Arthur played County cricket for Gloucestershire County for many years, from 1948 to 1974. He also played in 6 matches for the England cricket team.
But that's not all! Arthur Milton was also a talented football player. He played for Arsenal from 1951 to 1955. After that, he played for Bristol City. He even played one match for the England National Football Team against Austria at Wembley.
More recently, a special school called Briarwood School has been built in Hillfields. This school helps students with severe learning difficulties, from primary age up to sixth form.
Community Life in Hillfields
Churches and Local Services
In the heart of Hillfields, you'll find Hillfields Park Baptist Church. It opened on May 8, 1929. This church was built by Foster & Son and was first supported by the Fishponds Baptist Church. It also has a Youth Club for young people.
The area is also served by Hillfields Library, which is run by Bristol City Council. This is a great place to borrow books and learn new things.
Parks and Healthcare
Hillfields also has a Community centre and lovely recreational grounds in Hillfields Park. These are perfect places for sports, games, and community events.
Close to Hillfields, near Kingswood, South Gloucestershire, is Cossham Memorial Hospital. This hospital was founded in 1907 and provides important healthcare services to the community.
