History of Hilshire Village
In the 1940s, a man named Frank Bruess and his mother moved from Missouri to Texas. They bought a large piece of land, about 30 acres. Bruess was inspired by a country estate in Hillshire, England. He liked the name and decided to call his new development "Hilshire Village," but with only one "L." Building in Hilshire Village started in the early 1950s.
In the mid-1950s, people tried to create a new town called Spring Branch, but it didn't work out. Hilshire Village officially became its own city on April 15, 1955. Because it became a city, Houston could not take over Hilshire Village's land. Houston did, however, take over many areas around it that were not yet cities.
In 1960, 543 people lived in Hilshire Village. By 1970, the population grew to 627 residents. In the 1990s, the number of people living there reached 665. During this time, some older homes were taken down and replaced with newer ones.
