Hollie's Early Life and Interests
Hollie Steel started singing when she was only four years old. She loved watching her older brother, Joshua, perform. They both went to the KLF Dance Academy in Burnley. Before she was on Britain's Got Talent, Hollie acted in school plays. She performed in popular musicals like Annie and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Hollie's parents, Nina and Jason, work as NHS audiologists. They entered Hollie in Britain's Got Talent so she wouldn't feel left out. They thought her brother, Joshua, who was five years older, would be more likely to succeed. But the judges really liked Hollie's audition, and Joshua decided not to continue.
Her Journey on Britain's Got Talent
In April 2009, Hollie auditioned for the third season of Britain's Got Talent. In her first TV appearance, she started by ballet dancing to "I Could Have Danced All Night" from the musical My Fair Lady. Just as judge Simon Cowell was about to press his buzzer, she began to sing with an amazing, strong voice.
The audience gave her a standing ovation, and all four judges loved her performance. Judge Kelly Brook was so moved she cried and called it "beautiful and lovely." Many people thought she might even win over Susan Boyle, who was also a big hit on the show. Over 13 million people watched Hollie's performance. Within a day, over a million people worldwide had seen her video on YouTube. She was even interviewed on the US TV show Today.
During her semi-final performance in May, Hollie stopped singing in the middle of her song. She asked for a second chance. Simon Cowell stepped in and said she could perform again. Her second try at "Edelweiss" went very well. The judges praised her for being so brave and talented, especially after what happened.
In the final, Hollie sang "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again" from Phantom of the Opera. Her performance was well-received. She finished in sixth place, getting about 3.9% of the 4 million votes.
In June and July 2009, Hollie joined the Britain's Got Talent – The Live Tour 2009. She performed with most of the other finalists from her season. She was taught at home between rehearsals and the start of the tour. The tour started in Birmingham, England, on June 12, 2009, and ended on July 5, 2009, in Bournemouth. During the live shows, Hollie sang solo and also with other artists, like 2 Grand.
