The horned blenny (scientific name: Paraclinus grandicomis) is a small, interesting fish. It lives in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, especially around reefs. This fish is a type of labrisomid blenny. It's a benthic fish, which means it spends its time near the bottom of the ocean, cruising over sand or rocks. It looks for food like small crustaceans there.

Where Horned Blennies Live
Horned blennies are often found in shallow ocean waters. They usually live in areas that are only 0 to 3 meters deep. You can spot them in places like sponges, corals, and sea anemones.
They choose their homes based on where they can find lots of food and safe places to hide. This is why you might see them living near:
Where to Find Horned Blennies
The horned blenny lives in warm, tropical waters. Their home stretches from Southern Florida all the way through the Lesser Antilles. These fish prefer both tropical and subtropical climate zones.
What Horned Blennies Look Like
The horned blenny is a brown fish with pale, mottled spots. These spots cover its whole body and head. Its dorsal (top), anal (bottom), and tail fins have dark brown bases. The edges of these fins are pale or clear.
This fish has a unique look:
- It has a long snout that is blunt at the end.
- A single, large horn, called the maxillary bone, sticks out from its head.
- Thin strands of cirrus cover its nostrils.
- More cirrus lines its stalk from its eyes to its dorsal fin.
The blenny's spine is made of 34 to 35 small vertebrae. This helps it stay small, growing to a maximum length of only 4 centimeters (about 1.5 inches).
How Horned Blennies Adapt
The horned blenny, like some other Caribbean reef fish, has special ways to protect itself. They have developed behaviors and body features that make them immune to the stings of sea anemones.
To become resistant, a blenny needs to be stung repeatedly. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. After this, they can safely live among the stinging tentacles of an anemone.
What Horned Blennies Eat
Horned blennies are carnivorous fish. This means they eat other animals. They mainly feast on worms and small crustacea found on the seabed. Both of these food sources are plentiful on the ocean floor in shallow waters, where most blennies live.
Male and Female Differences
In many types of blennies, the males have a longer maxillary bone (horn) than the females. This is true even if the overall size of the fish is the same. For the horned blenny, both males and females have their horns located on the front half of their skull near their eyes.
