Hornellsville is a town in Steuben County, New York. It is located in the United States. In 2020, about 4,039 people lived there, not counting the nearby city of Hornell. The town's name comes from an important pioneer family who settled in the area long ago.
The Town of Hornellsville is on the western edge of Steuben County. It completely surrounds the city of Hornell. Interestingly, the city of Hornell was called Hornellsville until 1906. People usually just say "Hornell" when talking about the area.

History
The first settlers arrived in the Hornellsville area around 1790. This was near where the city of Hornell is today.
The Town of Hornellsville was officially created in 1820. It was formed from a part of the Town of Canisteo. Later, some of Hornellsville's land was used to create other towns. These included Hartsville in 1844 and part of Fremont in 1854.
In 1852, the community of Hornellsville became an official village. It was then called the Village of Hornellsville. In 1888, it grew even more and became the City of Hornellsville. The city changed its name to the City of Hornell in 1906. The Town of Hornellsville still surrounds the City of Hornell.
Geography
The town of Hornellsville covers about 43.7 square miles (113.2 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 43.5 square miles (112.7 square kilometers), is land. A small part, about 0.2 square miles (0.5 square kilometers), is water.
Major roads pass through the northern part of the town. These include the Southern Tier Expressway, which is also Interstate 86 and New York State Route 17. New York State Route 21 and New York State Route 36 meet near the city of Hornell.
The Canisteo River flows south through the town. The western border of Hornellsville is also the border of Allegany County.
