Geography and Landscape

Humlikon covers an area of about 3.7 square kilometers (which is about 1.4 square miles). A large part of this land, about 63.6%, is used for farming. This means there are many fields and farms around the area.

About 28.3% of Humlikon is covered by forests. The remaining 8.2% of the land is where buildings and roads are located. The municipality is situated south of the Thur river, in a region known as the Zürcher Weinland, which means "Zurich Wine Country."

The Story of Swissair Flight 306

On September 4, 1963, a very sad event happened that deeply affected Humlikon. Forty-three people from the village were traveling together. They were going to visit a special agricultural test site near Geneva. They were on a flight called Swissair Flight 306.

Sadly, the plane crashed shortly after it took off. This terrible accident meant that Humlikon lost a large number of its people. The village had 217 inhabitants at the time, so about one-fifth of everyone living there was lost. Among those who died were all the members of the local council, all the school caretakers, and the person who worked at the post office.

The crash left 39 children without one or both of their parents. However, because many families still had grandparents or older brothers and sisters living with them, most children were able to stay in their homes. Only six children had to move, and almost all of them were raised by relatives in other nearby villages.

After this tragedy, the people of Humlikon had to elect a new local council. This happened on October 26 and 27. It was a difficult time, and it wasn't easy to find enough people to fill all the empty positions on the council.
