Huntington is a town in Chittenden County, Vermont, United States. It is a type of community known as a New England town. In 2020, about 1,938 people lived there.

History of Huntington
The town was first called "New Huntington." Its name was changed to "Huntington" in October 1795. The town was named after three landholders: Josiah, Charles, and Marmaduke Hunt.
The Huntington Lower Village Church is an important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. An earlier church building from 1839 was started by a Black Baptist preacher named Charles Bowles. This building was later used as the town hall and fire department.
Geography and Nature
Huntington is located in the southeastern part of Chittenden County. It shares borders with Addison County to the southwest and Washington County to the east. The town sits on the west side of the Green Mountains.
The Huntington River flows through the town's valley. This river flows north and is a branch of the Winooski River. The top of Camel's Hump mountain, which is 4,083 feet (1,244 meters) high, is in Huntington's northeast corner. It is on the border with Duxbury.
Town Area and Villages
Huntington covers a total area of about 38 square miles (98.5 square kilometers). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.1 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.
There are three main villages within the town:
- Huntington village is in the northwest part of the town.
- Huntington Center is located in the middle of the town.
- Hanksville is in the southern part.
All three of these villages are located along the Huntington River.
People of Huntington
In 2020, there were 1,934 people living in Huntington. There were 789 households and 526 families. This means there were about 51 people for every square mile (19.7 people per square kilometer).
About 44% of the homes had children under 18 living there. Most households, about 59%, were married couples. About 22% of all households were made up of people living alone.
The average age of people in Huntington has increased over the years. The average age in Huntington is 45.9 years old. This is older than the average age for the rest of Chittenden County, which is 36.7 years old.
Climate
Huntington has a type of climate called a humid continental climate. This means the town experiences big changes in temperature throughout the year. Summers are usually warm to hot and can be humid. Winters are cold, and sometimes very cold.
Education
The Mount Mansfield Modified Union School District runs the public schools in Huntington.
For a long time, Huntington had its own elementary school district. Residents voted several times against joining the larger Mount Mansfield school district. Vermont passed a law called Act 46 that encouraged school districts to merge.
After some legal challenges, the people of Huntington voted on June 6, 2019, to merge their school district into the Mount Mansfield Modified Union School District. This vote passed with 450 votes for the merger and 191 against it.
