Ikariam is a fun online strategy game you can play right in your web browser. It's a "massively multiplayer online" (MMO) game, which means lots of players can play together at the same time! Made by a company called Gameforge, Ikariam lets you build and manage your own ancient city. It was first released in 2008 and is set in the time of Ancient Greece.

How to Play Ikariam

The main goal in Ikariam is to grow your town, collect important resources, and even conquer other players' towns. You don't have to play for hours at a time. You can give your town's people tasks and then come back later to see what they've done.

Starting Your Town

When you first start, you get control of a small town. Your town's citizens can pay taxes to you. Or, you can send them to gather resources instead. The game world is made up of many islands. Each island can hold up to 16 players and their towns.

Important Resources

Every island has a Saw Mill to get wood. There are also four special types of islands. Each of these islands provides a unique resource:

  • One island gives crystal.
  • Another island provides sulfur.
  • A third island produces wine.
  • The last type of island offers marble.

You use these resources to build important structures. These include barracks for soldiers, shipyards for ships, and academies for research.

Keeping Citizens Happy

Your town's citizens can be trained as soldiers. They can also research new technologies. Or, they can do other jobs that you pay them for. It's important to keep your citizens happy. If they are not happy, they might leave your town! Building a tavern is a great way to make them happier. You can also build museums and make cultural agreements with other players.

Your Helpful Advisors

The game gives you four advisors to help you out. You can find them at the top right of your screen. They are:

  • Towns: This advisor tells you what buildings are finished. It also shares other important town events.
  • Military: This advisor shows you all your army and navy movements. It also shows any actions other players are taking against your towns.
  • Research: Here you can see all the new technologies you can research. It also shows your research points. You use these points to unlock new things.
  • Diplomacy: This advisor shows all the messages you send and receive. It also shows messages from your alliance members.

Getting Game Advantages

Ikariam is free to play, which means you don't have to pay to start. However, players can choose to buy special advantages in the game. This is done through a system called microtransactions. If you buy these, you get a special resource called Ambrosia. Ambrosia can be used to get "Ikariam Plus," which is a premium version of the game.

Joining Alliances

When you build an embassy and upgrade it to level three, you can create an alliance. An alliance is a group of players who share similar interests or goals. Players in an alliance can help each other. For example, they can place their units in each other's towns for extra defense.

Working Together

With an alliance, you can work together to attack other towns. You can also join forces for raids. The number of members your alliance can have depends on your embassy's level. Also, your alliance gets a small amount of "bonus" resources each day. This bonus depends on how many people are in your alliance.

Alliance Roles

An alliance has three important jobs that the leader can assign:

  • The Diplomat: This person makes treaties with other alliances. They also answer messages sent to the alliance. They can edit the alliance's public page, which all players can see.
  • The General: This person watches over all military movements of alliance members. They can also cancel any attacks being made by alliance members.
  • The Home Secretary: This person manages the ranks within the alliance. They also edit the alliance's private page, which only alliance members can see.

Game Worlds

There are many different worlds in Ikariam. These worlds are named after letters of the Greek alphabet, from Alpha to Ypsilon.
