What's in a Name? The Meaning of Impach

The name "Impach" comes from the Salishan language. This language was spoken by the San Poil tribe. In their dialect, Impach means "white lake." This name probably refers to Camille Lake. This lake is located about 2 kilometers (1.25 miles) north of Impach.

A Look Back: Impach's History

Impach has a rich history, especially for Native American people.

  • It was a special place for traditional dance ceremonies. Members of the confederated tribes held these events here.

Gold and Logging in Impach

In 1896, gold was found in Ferry County. This led to several gold mines opening near Impach. Some of these mines were active until the 1950s. The Gold Twenty Mine, for example, produced lode gold, lead, and silver.

During the 1930s, a government program helped people find work. This program was similar to the Works Progress Administration. It started a small logging operation in Impach. This brought some families to the area who needed jobs during the Great Depression.

Impach also had its own post office. It served the community from 1922 until 1954. Today, the beautiful valley around Impach is mostly used for grazing land for animals.
