A Look at Indiera Alta's Past
Indiera Alta is one of three special areas in Maricao known as the Indieras de Maricao. The other two are called Indiera Baja and Indiera Fría. These names come from the word "indio," which means "Indian" in Spanish.
A Safe Place for Taínos
Because it was hard to reach, this area was a safe hiding place for the Taínos. The Taínos were the native people of Puerto Rico. They were trying to escape from the Spanish and other European explorers who started to colonize Puerto Rico in the 1400s.
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of a peace agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an unincorporated territory of the United States. This means it's a part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
Counting the People: Census Data
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,145 people lived in the Indiera Alta barrio at that time. Here's how the population has changed over the years:
