Early Life and Background
Adila Sedraïa was born in Paris, France, on June 26, 1984. Her parents were from Algeria. Her mother worked as a caregiver, and her grandmother used to sing at weddings. Indila has two older sisters. She describes herself as a "child of the world" because she has family roots from Algeria, Cambodia, India, and Egypt. Before she became a singer, she worked as a tour guide at a large international market in Paris called Marché international de Rungis. She chose her stage name, Indila, because she loves India very much.
Besides her native French, Indila has also sung in English, like in the songs Dreamin with Youssoupha and Bye Bye Sonyé with DJ Abdel. She has also sung parts in Urdu (a language spoken in South Asia) in songs like Criminel by TLF and Thug mariage by Rohff.
Music Career
Indila met music producer Skalpovich, and this meeting helped her get into the world of rap music. She started working with several French rappers. Indila began her music career around 2009. She sang on songs like Invitaation by Vitaa and Hiro by Soprano. She also helped write songs, such as J'ai besoin d'y croire for Admiral T.
Hiro was one of Indila's first big successes. It reached number 26 on the music charts in France and number 27 in Belgium. For the next three years, she continued to work with many other French rappers and DJs. Some of these songs include Dreamin with Youssoupha, which reached number 14 in France in July 2012. Indila also wrote songs like Plus Haut for Matt Pokora and Avec Toi for Axel Tony. Avec Toi was produced by Skalpovich and reached number 7 on the French charts in November 2012.
In November 2013, Indila released her first single, "Dernière danse". This song was from her album Mini World and quickly became a hit. It entered the top 10 on the French charts in January 2014 and reached number 2, staying there for many weeks. The song remained on the French charts for a long time, showing how popular it was. It was also a big success outside France, becoming the number one song on iTunes in Greece and Romania, and number two in Turkey by early 2014. The music video for "Dernière danse" came out in December 2013. It reached 100 million views on YouTube by July 2014 and now has over 1.1 billion views! It became very popular on TikTok as well.
In February 2014, Indila released her first album, Mini World, which was produced by Skalpovich. Besides "Dernière danse", two other songs from the album also became top 20 hits in France: "Tourner dans le vide" (meaning "Spinning in the Emptiness"), which reached number 13, and "S.O.S", which reached number 8. Mini World was the best-selling album in France when it first came out. It was also the third-best-selling album in France for all of 2014. The album was also very popular in other countries, like Poland and Belgium.
Indila has won several awards for her music. In October 2014, she won the MTV Europe Music Award for Best French Artist. In February 2015, her album Mini World won the Best New Album of the Year award at the 30th Victoires de la Musique, which are major music awards in France. In 2015, Indila also received the European Border Breakers Award.
After five years without releasing new music, Indila returned on August 23, 2019, with her new song "Parle à ta tête" (meaning "Speak to Your Head"). The music videos for the song were released in November 2019.
More recently, Indila has continued to collaborate with other artists. In April 2021, she sang a duet with Amir on his single Carrousel. In January 2023, she sang on the track Roi 2 cœurs with Zaho for Zaho's album Résilience.
