The Story of Inside Out
The movie begins inside Riley's mind, where her emotions live in a place called Headquarters. These emotions are Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger. They help Riley react to the world and store her experiences as colorful memories. The most important memories become "core memories," which power different parts of Riley's personality, shown as floating islands. Joy usually takes the lead, trying to keep Riley happy and limit Sadness's influence.
Riley's Big Move
When Riley is 11, her family moves from Minnesota to San Francisco because of her dad's new job. This move is tough for Riley. Their new house is small, her dad is busy, and even the local pizza place serves broccoli pizza, which Riley dislikes! To make things worse, their moving truck gets lost.
On Riley's first day at her new school, Sadness accidentally makes a happy memory turn sad, causing Riley to cry in front of her class. This creates a new, sad core memory. Joy tries to get rid of it, but during a struggle with Sadness, all the core memories get knocked out of their place. Joy, Sadness, and the core memories are then sucked out of Headquarters.
A Journey Through the Mind
With Joy and Sadness gone, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are left in charge of Riley. This causes many problems, making Riley feel distant from her parents and friends. Her personality islands start to crumble and fall into the "Memory Dump," where forgotten things disappear forever. Anger decides that Riley should run away back to Minnesota, thinking it will make her happy again.
Meanwhile, Joy and Sadness are lost in the vast area of long-term memory. They meet Bing Bong, Riley's old imaginary friend from childhood. Bing Bong suggests they ride the "train of thought" back to Headquarters. After many adventures, they finally catch the train. However, it stops when Riley falls asleep and then crashes when another personality island collapses.
Understanding Sadness
Joy becomes worried that all the core memories will turn sad. She tries to get back to Headquarters alone, but the ground collapses, sending her and Bing Bong into the Memory Dump. While there, Joy remembers a time when a sad memory turned happy because Riley's parents and friends comforted her. This helps Joy understand that Sadness has an important role: to show others when Riley is overwhelmed and needs help.
Joy and Bing Bong try to escape the Memory Dump using Bing Bong's old wagon rocket. It flies when they sing, but they are too heavy together. In a brave moment, Bing Bong jumps out on their last try, allowing Joy to escape. Bing Bong then fades away, becoming forgotten.
Working Together
Joy reunites with Sadness and they return to Headquarters. They find that Anger's plan has made the control console stop working, leaving Riley feeling nothing as she gets on a bus to Minnesota. To everyone's surprise, Joy lets Sadness take control of the console. Sadness is able to fix it and makes Riley get off the bus and go home.
As Sadness puts the core memories back, they change from happy to sad. Riley tearfully tells her parents that she misses her old life. Her parents comfort her, admitting they miss Minnesota too. Joy and Sadness then work the console together, creating a new core memory that mixes happiness and sadness. A new island forms, showing Riley's acceptance of her new life in San Francisco.
Life a Year Later
A year later, Riley is 12 years old and has settled into her new home. She has made new friends and enjoys her old hobbies, plus some new ones. Inside Headquarters, her emotions admire Riley's new personality islands. They also get a bigger control console, with enough room for all of them to work together.
In a short scene after the movie ends, we get to see inside the "headquarters" of other people in the city, showing how their emotions work too.
How the Movie Was Made
The idea for Inside Out came to director Pete Docter in late 2009. He noticed how his own daughter's personality changed as she grew older. This made him wonder what was happening inside her mind.
Docter and co-writer Ronnie del Carmen developed the idea of emotions as characters. To make the movie as accurate as possible, the filmmakers talked to real psychologists and brain scientists. They wanted to understand how the mind works and how emotions affect us. Making Inside Out took about five and a half years and cost around $175 million. It was a big project with many story changes along the way.
