Intake is a friendly suburb and former village in South Yorkshire, England. It's about 5 miles (8 km) south-east of Sheffield city centre. Long ago, Intake was a small village. But during the 1900s, it grew and became part of the big city of Sheffield. You can find Intake connected to nearby places like Frecheville and Gleadless by roads like Birley Moor Road and Hollinsend Road.

A Look Back at Intake's History

Before the 1800s, Intake was mostly open farmland. A small stream called the Shire Brook flows through the south-east part of the area. This stream used to be an important border, separating the counties of Derbyshire and Yorkshire.

Coal Mining and Growth

In the 1900s, many coal mines, called collieries, opened in Intake. Because of these mines, coal mining became the main job for people living there. This helped the village grow a lot.

In 1870, a book called Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Intake. It said Intake was a village about 3 miles south-east of Sheffield. The book also mentioned that Intake was close to the coal mines and had its own post office.

Important Buildings

Intake has some special buildings that are protected because of their history. One of these is the Intake Cemetery Chapel, which was built in 1879. The walls around the cemetery and a small washhouse nearby are also considered important historical structures. The very first person buried in the cemetery was George Smith, who sadly died at the Birley Collieries on January 13, 1903.
