How the Song Was Made
The talented team of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez also wrote the songs for the first Frozen movie in 2013. They came back to write all the songs for Frozen II. They even helped create the story for the movie!
As the story for Frozen II came together, the songwriters figured out where songs would fit best to help the story move forward. They needed a very important song for Elsa. At first, they wrote a song called "I Seek the Truth." But then, the idea of Elsa hearing a mysterious voice was added to the story. So, the songwriters went back and wrote "Into the Unknown" to fit this new plot point perfectly.
Idina Menzel first sang the song in her dressing room. The songwriters brought a keyboard for her to practice with.
What the Song Means
"Into the Unknown" is Elsa's main song in Frozen II. It features a special siren call that you hear throughout the movie's music. This call is inspired by an old Scandinavian singing style called kulning.
The song is all about Elsa's feelings and choices. She keeps hearing a mysterious voice calling her. The song shows her inner struggle about whether to stay safe in Arendelle or follow the voice to find out where it's coming from.
Clark Spencer, the president of Disney Animation Studios, said the song is like an anthem. He explained that it's about feeling called to do something, even if you don't know what it is or where it will lead. It encourages you to "follow your calling."
Around the World
When Frozen II first came out in theaters, it was dubbed into 47 different languages! This means people all over the world could hear "Into the Unknown" in their own language. A special Northern Sami version was even made, because the movie was inspired by Sami culture.
Some singers performed the song in more than one language. For example, Willemijn Verkaik sang it in both Dutch and German. Gisela sang it in both Catalan and European Spanish.
On February 9, 2020, Idina Menzel and Aurora performed "Into the Unknown" at the 92nd Academy Awards. They were joined by nine international singers who sang parts of the song in their own languages! This showed how popular the song was all over the world.
