The Iowa Reservation is a special area of land for the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska. It is located where the states of Nebraska and Kansas meet. Specifically, it's in parts of Richardson County in Nebraska and Brown and Doniphan Counties in Kansas. The main offices for the tribe are near White Cloud, Kansas. This reservation was officially set up by a special agreement, called a treaty, in March 1861. Today, the tribe runs a fun place called Casino White Cloud on their land.
History of the Iowa Tribe
The Iowa people, who call themselves Báxoje, originally lived near the Great Lakes in North America. Over time, they moved south and west into the area that is now Missouri. However, they were later moved to Kansas. This happened because of an agreement called the Platte Purchase in 1836.
More agreements in 1854 and 1861 made the Iowa Tribe's land smaller. This smaller area was known as the "Diminished Reserve." In 1878, some Iowa people left this reservation and moved to a place called Indian Territory. They became known as the Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma. The Iowa people who stayed on the reservation became the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska.
How Big Is the Reservation?
Today, the Iowa Reservation covers about 12,000 acres (49 km2) of land. This land is split almost equally between Kansas and Nebraska. It includes parts of Brown County in Kansas and Richardson County in Nebraska.
The reservation is located along the Missouri River. The tribe owns a large portion of this land. In 1995, it was reported that over 1,618.7 acres (6.551 km2) of Iowa tribal lands were held in trust. This means the land is managed by the government for the tribe's benefit. Currently, the tribe reports that they own about 2,707 acres (10.95 km2) within the reservation boundaries.
Life and Activities on the Reservation
The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is very active on their reservation. They farm about 1,077 acres (4.36 km2) of land. Other parts of their land are used for pastures and woods. They also have a haying operation that helps feed about 150 cattle.
The tribe owns and runs Casino White Cloud. They also operate a service station. These businesses provide jobs for many people, employing about 186 individuals.
As a sovereign nation, the Iowa Tribe has its own government. This means they can make many of their own rules. They have their own police and fire departments to keep everyone safe. They also have a tribal court to handle legal matters.
The tribe cares for its community members. They have a health clinic and special health representatives. There is also a center for senior citizens, which provides meals and even delivers them to homes. The tribe hosts fun events throughout the year. These include a Fourth of July rodeo, a demolition derby in August, and the annual Iowa Tribe Powwow in September.
