María Isabel Allende Bussi (born January 18, 1945) is an important politician from Chile. She is a member of the Socialist Party. Isabel is the youngest daughter of Salvador Allende, who was a former president of Chile, and Hortensia Bussi.
Isabel Allende served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies from 1994 to 2010. In March 2010, she became a Senator for the Atacama Region. On February 28, 2014, she was chosen to be the president of the Senate. Her father also held this position in the 1960s. This made her the first woman to be president of the Senate in Chilean history.

Isabel Allende's Early Life and Education
Isabel Allende went to Maisonette College. When she was 17, in 1962, she started studying sociology at university. She also joined the university's socialist group. Five years later, she went with her father to a meeting of the Socialist Party in Chile.
Life During the Military Coup
On September 11, 1973, a military coup happened in Chile. This coup was led by General Augusto Pinochet. Isabel Allende was at the presidential palace that day. She was the last person to enter the building. When the military started bombing the palace, her father, Salvador Allende, told the women to leave for their safety.
Salvador Allende was the first Marxist president elected in the Americas. He was the president when the coup happened in 1973. He died during the coup. The military coup led to a 17-year period of dictatorship in Chile.
Isabel Allende, along with her mother and sister Beatriz, found safety in Mexico. She lived there for sixteen years. In 1989, she returned to Chile as the military rule was ending.
Isabel Allende's Family
Isabel Allende was married to Sergio Meza, and they had a son named Gonzalo (1965-2010). Gonzalo was active in the "No" movement before the 1988 vote. He also helped start the Party for Democracy.
Later, Isabel married Romilio Tambutti. They have a daughter named Marcia, who was born in 1971.
Other members of the Allende family have also been important in Chilean politics. Her niece, Maya Fernández, is also part of the Socialist Party. Since March 2022, she has been the Minister of Defense under President Gabriel Boric. Her nephew, Alejandro Fernández Allende, is known as a gay rights activist.
Isabel Allende's Political Career
After returning to Chile, Isabel Allende began a successful career in politics. She became a member of the Socialist Party of Chile. When Chile became a democracy again in 1990, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. She served as the President of this group between 2003 and 2004. She was the second woman to hold this important position.
Isabel Allende, along with other Senators like Soledad Alvear, worked to create a law that would allow Chileans living in other countries to vote. This right to vote from overseas became law (Law No. 20.748). This allowed many Chileans to vote in the 2020 national vote and in presidential elections.
Some of her main achievements include:
- Helping to change Chile's divorce laws.
- Supporting a law that allows people with disabilities to become judges and notaries.
- Working on a law that allows for certain health choices for women.
- Supporting laws about gender identity.
- Working on laws related to water use.
- Helping to create a government service to protect biodiversity and the environment.
She also supports Chile joining the Trans-Pacific partnership, which is a trade agreement.
