María Isabel Allende Bussi (born 18 January 1945) is an important politician from Chile. She is a member of the Socialist Party. Isabel is the youngest daughter of Salvador Allende, who was a former president of Chile. Her mother was Hortensia Bussi.
Isabel Allende has held many important roles in Chilean politics. From 1994 to 2010, she served as a deputy. In March 2010, she became a Senator for the Atacama Region. On 28 February 2014, she made history. She was chosen as the president of the Senate. This made her the first woman to hold this position in Chilean history. Her father had also been president of the Senate in the 1960s.
About Isabel Allende's Life
Isabel Allende went to Maisonette College. When she was 17, in 1962, she started studying sociology. She also joined the university's socialist group. Five years later, she went with her father to a meeting of the Socialist Party.
On 11 September 1973, a military takeover happened in Chile. This was led by General Augusto Pinochet. Isabel Allende was at the presidential palace that day. Her father, Salvador Allende, told the women to leave when the palace was being attacked.
After the military takeover, a dictatorship began that lasted 17 years. Isabel, her mother, and her sister Beatriz went to Mexico. They lived there for sixteen years. In 1989, she returned to Chile as the military rule was ending.
Isabel Allende has two children. Her son, Gonzalo (1965-2010), was active in politics. He helped with the "No" movement before the 1988 plebiscite. He also helped start the Party for Democracy. Her daughter, Marcia, was born in 1971.
Many members of the Allende family have been involved in Chilean politics. Her niece, Maya Fernández, is also a member of the Socialist Party. She became the Minister of Defense in March 2022. She serves under President Gabriel Boric.
Isabel Allende's Political Work
When Isabel Allende returned to Chile, she started a successful political career. She joined the Socialist Party of Chile. After Chile became a democracy again in 1990, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. She served as its President between 2003 and 2004. She was the second woman to hold this position.
Isabel Allende has worked on important laws. She helped create a law to let Chileans living abroad vote. This law, called Law No. 20.748, allowed many Chileans to vote in elections.
She has also worked on laws about gender identity. She supported changes to the water code. She also helped create a government service to protect biodiversity and the environment. She supports Chile joining the Trans-Pacific partnership.
